Starting homeschooling can feel like stepping into the unknown, but it’s also a beautiful opportunity to raise your children with an Islamic worldview. Homeschooling allows you to nurture both their hearts and minds in a way that aligns with your family’s values. Here are 10 tips for starting your homeschool journey, with guidance from the Quran to keep us motivated along the way:

  1. Make the Right Intention
Homeschooling is more than academics—it’s about raising children with a deep love of Allah and our Beloved Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Before you begin, make your intention for the sake of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, said, “Actions are judged by their intentions” (Bukhari). When your intention is pure, Allah will bless your efforts.
  2. Start with the Istikhara Prayer and Dua
Ask Allah to guide you in your homeschooling journey. “Call upon Me; I will respond to you” (Quran 40:60). Dua is a powerful tool for seeking clarity, patience, and wisdom for the decisions ahead. It is a big decision, and taking the time to pray Salatul Istikhara is highly recommended.
  3. Understand Legal Laws
Each province has different legal requirements for homeschooling. Ensure you comply with these while creating an Islamic foundation for your children’s education. Here are the laws for BC, Canada. You can register as a homeschooler or enrol as an online student. What’s the difference? In both cases, the learning occurs at home or elsewhere, often online. The key difference between a registered homeschooler and an enrolled student is who delivers and oversees the educational program. An enrolled student is at an “online school” previously known as Distance Learning (DL), but the program is still at home with the parent using the resources you can often choose for yourself. 4. Create a Flexible Routine
Homeschooling gives you the flexibility to craft a schedule that works for your family. Have your schedule rotate around prayer times and not the other way around. Try not to include any sports, appointments, or meetings during prayer time. Include time for Quran study, Salah, and breaks to enjoy nature or creative activities. “So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief” (Quran 94:6) — know that flexibility will ease your day. When you put Allah, subhana wa ta’ala first, everything becomes easy, in shaa Allah.
  5. Tailor the Curriculum to Your Children’s Needs
One of the joys of homeschooling is adapting lessons to your child’s learning style. Whether your child is an auditory, visual, or hands-on learner, find a method that works best for them. Allah tells us, “Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear” (Quran 2:286). Be kind to yourself and your children as you figure out what works. There are a wide variety of resources and curriculum these days. It takes time to find resources for each subject, but with research and guidance often with a learning consultant, you can find the best resources for the unique needs of your child.
  6. Incorporate Islamic Studies
Infuse your homeschool with Quran lessons, Seerah, and Islamic values. Take every opportunity to teach your children about the beauty of Islam. “And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember” (Quran 54:17)— use this beautiful time to memorize and study the Quran together.
  7. Focus on Character Building
Homeschooling allows you to shape your children’s akhlaq (character) and beautify manners. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said, “The best of you are those who have the best character” (Bukhari). Use daily interactions to model kindness, honesty, and patience and children who are empathic, confident, and have beautiful manners.
  8. Seek Support from Your Community
You don’t have to do it alone! Join local homeschooling groups (like VMH), Nature Clubs, Sports, or Islamic co-ops. Surrounding yourself with other homeschooling families can provide valuable advice and companionship on your journey.
  9. Incorporate Nature and Hands-On Learning
Allah’s creation is a perfect classroom! “And it is He who spread out the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers…” (Quran 13:3). Take time to explore nature with your children, incorporating science, geography, and creativity. Use library books to strengthen your outings.
  10. Make Time for Self-Care
As a homeschooling parent, taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your children. Make time for your own spiritual growth, rest, and well-being so you can approach homeschooling with energy and peace.

Homeschooling is a unique journey, and when guided by the Quran and Sunnah, it becomes a means to draw closer to Allah while fostering the love of learning in your children, in shaa Allah.
